AN increasing number of people with vision defects are turning to a new treatment for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism that corrects eyesight by reshaping the cornea itself, one micron at a time. The equipment used in this treatment, which takes less than a minute to complete, is the excimer laser, a device capable of removing extremely thin layers of corneal tissue without damaging adjacent areas. Of the 5,000 excimer lasers for corneal surgery currently in use around the world, 1,000 are made by Nidek, a company based in Gamagori city in Aichiken prefecture.
