Toronto-based Barrick Gold Corp. has refuted allegations that as many as 52 artisanal miners may have lost their lives in the Bulyanhulu area in Tanzania in August 1996. At that time, the Bulyanhulu site was owned by Sutton Resources Ltd of Vancouver, a company which was subsequently acquired by Barrick for C$525 million in shares (MJ, February 26, 1999, p. 130).
The allegations have been made by the Lawyers Environmental Action Team (LEAT) of Tanzania, supported by legal groups in Canada and the US. They are calling for an independent review of the claims that artisana
