EPA Rejects Navistar 2010 Alternative

The Environmental Protection Agency has rejected Navistar Inc.'s request to allow manufacturers to sell engines compliant with either the agency's 2007 or 2010 emission standards until 2012.

"The implementation will move forward as planned," EPA spokeswoman Cathy Milbourn told LIGHT & MEDIUM TRUCK.

In February, James Hebe, Navistar's senior vice president for North American sales, told L&MT that the manufacturer was lobbying EPA for the delay.

Starting Jan. 1, the EPA set "near-zero" emission standards for nitrogen oxides. All major truck and truck engine manufacturers except Navistar will use selective catalytic reduction to meet the EPA rule.

Navistar, manufacturer of International Trucks and MaxxForce engines, has selected enhanced exhaust gas recirculation. - L&MT
