Washington - In a move that could help the health of recycling workers, a union and a consumer advocate have called for the federal government to address the dangers of the metal beryllium.

Beryllium can be deadly to anyone who inhales dust that contains traces of the metal, according to the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical & Energy Workers International Union and the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen in a Sept. 3 petition filed with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
