Communicate more effectively, and affect your bottom line, with a Team Building Plan

Monday, July 6 2009

 “A study of executives from 1000 of the nation’s largest companies indicates that managers spend 13% of their time, the equivalent of six-and-a-half work weeks per year, resolving personality conflicts among workers”   - Robert Half International

As a leader, have you ever felt as if you were speaking a foreign language?  Many of us frequently feel that way when we are communicating with our team and wonder why we’re not getting through.  All of us have a unique behavioral or communication style, and if we’re not able to effectively communicate in a way which gets through to others, we might as well be speaking a different language.   A Team Building System helps a small business owner because it is a system for understanding the behavioral or personality differences among your team and teaches you how to improve communication by understanding the psychological profile of your team members.  An effective Team Building System helps you in several ways:

?         Recruit the right kind of talent to fit the profile of the position requirements;

?         Tailor training to the person’s communication style to reduce ramp up time;

?         Provide direction as to key priorities in such a way as they are understood and effectively acted upon;

?         Increase harmony among all team members; and

?         Help team members communicate more effectively with each other

Daniel Coates said that “Well-intentioned, hard-working people often have blind spots about important tendencies. In fact, they may be the only ones in their group who do not realize that they have a problem”

There are several outstanding behavioral profile systems that exist today.  DISC, which was developed by Harvard psychologist William Moulton Marston in 1928 and has been validated and perfected over the years.   The DISC profile system measures observable behavior.  It can be very helpful in identifying the right talent as well as helping the individual, once hired understand their own strengths and gaps.  It has been used effectively in team building programs to help manager and staff communicate more effectively with each other.   It is particularly helpful to a manager who may need  to learn how to adapt their behavior to get your message across.  To be a truly  effective coach and manager, you need to understand how your employee responds to coaching.

Imagine this. If you are a bottom line kind of person and you are trying to explain a policy or procedure to someone who has a need for more detail, there can be a  disconnect. But if you understand this, then you and other members of your team can adapt their style accordingly to be able to get that message across in  a way which makes sense to the person on the receiving end.

If you implement an effective Team Building System, it will positively affect productivity, morale and at the end of the day the bottom line of your business.
