Put Your People On Payroll

Friday, February 15 2008

From Crain's New York: In New York State, the labor commissioner recently fined $4M to several small businesses that had incorrectly classified employees as independent contractors. By counting employees as independent contractors, rather than full-time or part-time workers, employers avoid paying unemployment insurance, overtime, workers’ compensation insurance and other benefits.

Even if your business is not in New York, now is the time to put the people who regularly work for on payroll to avoid fines. Classify them as employees not as independent contractors. You can use Paychex for payroll service, and the payroll can be automatically debited from a business checking account.
