Jun. 18--OLECKO, Poland -- The fattened cows grazing placidly, the sea of wheat on gently undulating hills, the deep forests and pristine lakes--all paint a picture of rural contentment that conceals the wrenching poverty of Warmia-Mazury.
Early in the last century, this region in Poland's northeast corner appeared on maps as East Prussia. Under German tutelage, the town of Olecko was called Treuburg, and it achieved fleeting fame as the site where Hitler's athletes trained for the 1936
