Dec. 13--Cristobal Perez's voice wavers when he speaks of the $350 pair of crocodile shoes he lost in a Santa Ana apartment fire this month.

"All of that money," he said.

He now wishes he'd shelled out some extra money for renter's insurance before the fire destroyed his and 68 other units at the La Serena apartment complex.

"You sometimes make mistakes," Perez said.

He isn't alone.
