Anthem completes Connecticut Blue deal.

Anthem Inc has acquired Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Connecticut Inc. Connecticut state insurance commissioner George Reider Jr permitted the companies to merge without having to form a nonprofit health foundation. Opponents of the merger wanted Blue Shield to give up control of charitable assets. Company officials said they would call off the merger if they were required to form a foundation.

Anthem Inc. has taken a big step toward expanding its Northeastern operations by completing a merger with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Connecticut.
