Automakers test drive e-prescribing.(Personal Digital Assistant)

The top three Detroit automakers are revving up electronic prescribing technology to put the brakes on their drug cost trends.

General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG have teamed up with pharmacy benefit manager Medco Health Solutions Inc. to encourage doctors to swap their pads for PDAs and e-prescribing software. The program - which started in January - hopes to target as many as 17,000 physicians in Michigan, making it the largest employer-sponsored e-prescribing initiative yet attempted.
