As CMS moves to implement the new Medicare law, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) has urged Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson to provide more money for the SHIP network of Medicare counseling programs. SHIP stands for State Health Insurance Assistance Programs.
Grassley said the approximately 1,300 local SHIPs deserve at least one dollar per Medicare beneficiary, for a total of $41 million. In the year ending March 31, 2004, SHIPs received $12.5 million, meaning Grassley wants to more than triple their funding. <
