Maine Officials to Examine Hospital Operations, Expenses.

Oct. 10--Maine hospitals will come under intense scrutiny in the coming year as the administration of Gov. John Baldacci works to rein in Maine's per capita health care expenditures, the 10th-highest in the nation.

Hospitals won the first round in the governor's recently enacted Dirigo health reform bill, refusing to accept mandated budget caps proposed in the original legislation. Instead, hospitals agreed to make a good-faith effort to limit budget increases voluntarily.
