A new report from the National Academies' National Research Council, Controlling the Quantum World, argues that the United States should increase its funding for atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) science. Funding for AMO research from the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Science Foundation

and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has increased by 26% over the last decade, but funding for research from the Department of Defense (DOD) has declined. However, the DOD does contribute $45 million per year to AMO research, $30 million of which comes from the Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency. In fiscal 2005, the DOE gave a total of $16.6 million for AMO research, and the NIST gave $70 million. The report advises that the federal government acknowledge the increase in the cost and capability of scientific instruments and revise its budgeting accordingly.
