PerkinElmer acquires microarray company spectral genomics.

Boston, MA 5/1/06--PerkinElmer has acquired the assets of Spectral Genomics for an undisclosed sum. Spectral Genomics provides microarrays and software for the identification of chromosomal abnormalities related to the study of cancer and pre- and post-natal genetic disorders. "Spectral Genomics'

innovative technologies are highly complementary to our current molecular medicine and genetic screening offerings," said Robert F. Friel, president of PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences.

According to PerkinElmer, array-based karyotyping is expected to replace microscope-based Fluorescent In-Situ Hybridization (FISH) techniques for chromosome analysis. Spectral Genomics' SpectralChip is a nucleic acid array designed for comparative genomic hybridization applications. This technology fits well with PerkinElmer's focus on personalized medicine and new technologies for diagnostics.
