Detective Harry Bosch comes out of retirement and returns to the Los Angeles Police Department as its "oldest living boot." He goes to work on the Open-Unsolved

Unit with his old friend, Kiz Rider. The first case is one with new DNA evidence involving a teenage girl who was killed in 1988. It seems that only Harry, with his dogged determination and intuition, is able to solve a mystery like this, even after such a long time. The trail inevitably leads to the girl's private school, her parents, and the detectives originally in charge of the case.

Actor Cariou has a deep-toned voice he uses well to differentiate characters without trying to establish accents; he keeps the engrossing tale moving along. A bonus is the author talking about why he brought Bosch out of retirement and also reading an excerpt from his new book, which revives a character from an earlier book and does not include Harry.
