McPherson suggests that the Battle of Antietam (not Gettysburg) was the most important battle of the war and provides a convincing argument for

it. In September 1862, Robert E. Lee invaded Maryland, leading 35,000 Confederate troops. On the 17th, General George McClellan's Union Army of 75,000 men met him at Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland. By the day's end. there were 23,000 casualties, the bloodiest one-day battle in American history. The North claimed victory. The author discusses the impact that a decisive Confederate victory would have had. Finally. McPherson looks at Union general George McClellan; this battle ended his military career.

Excerpts from letters, diaries and other sources add a human quality to this audio. Veteran reader Runger, well known for his serious approach to works of nonfiction, gives his usual first-rate performance. His impartial tone favors neither side and allows listeners to draw their own conclusions. Prof John E. Boyd, Jenkintown, PA
