Toshiba to launch European mobile handset business.

Electronics company Toshiba confirmed it has set up a European mobile phone handset business and will be launching its first phones by the middle of this year.

The company said it is confident there is enough room in the market for another handset competitor because it expects consumer demand for new mobile services and content will be the major driver of mobile phone sales in Europe for the next two years.

The first phones from Toshiba will be GPRS- enabled. The company also plans to make third-generation mobile phones for the European market as mobile operators introduce 3G networks.
