Louisiana unemployment rate for September below national rate

Louisiana's unemployment rate for September was 5.3 percent, marking the second consecutive month the rate has been below the national unemployment rate. The U.S. rate for September was 5.4 percent.

The state's September 2003 rate was 6.5 percent, a decrease of 1.2 percent from this time

last year. The state civilian labor force reached 2,059,900, up from 2,033,000 for August, while the total number of employed in September increased to 1,951,200, up from 1,932,100 in August.

New Orleans' unemployment rate remained 4.8 percent, the same from August and a 17 percent drop from this time last year when it was 5.8 percent.
