Communication is a two-way street, and if you're having trouble discussing issues and tasks with your boss, you can at least start working to improve your side of the street. To help break through a communication barrier, try the following tips from the I Hate Filing Club.
1. Pay attention,
2. Ask questions. Many people are intimidated or even afraid to ask their boss about something fearing they'll be perceived as incompetent. This is not true. Questions demonstrate you want to be absolutely certain about what is being communicated and show you're eager to learn more. Questions also open the door for two-way communication and a healthy exchange of ideas.
3. Write things down. Don't hesitate to take notes to be sure you clearly and accurately hear and remember what is being discussed.
4. Make suggestions. Your boss will often be pleased to hear your opinion on a particular subject. Be careful not to contradict or correct the boss in front of fellow workers. Do state your opinions if you feel they're good ones. The boss will appreciate your willingness to think on your own and take the initiative.
5. Follow-up. You may want to report back to your supervisor just to say something like, "With regard to that idea you had for a new filing system, I'm working on it right now and will have it completed by Thursday," or, "I've thought further about your plan for a new invoicing procedure, and I have some ideas of my own." Follow-up demonstrates you're being proactive about what you and your boss discussed, and you're enthusiastically implementing what the boss said.
