What Will an Accountant Do for Me?

The time has come for you to hand over your accounting to a professional. What services should you expect or not expect from an accountant?

Accounting services fall into two general categories.

Most people are familiar with the first type: basic accounting services. Most healthy businesses require the basics, including auditing financial statements; tax compilation, preparation and review for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and other business entities; and bookkeeping services. A certified public accountant should be able to provide these basic services.

The second group of accounting services is more complex, and may require the assistance of a larger or more progressive CPA firm. These accounting services include cash-flow planning, tax planning, general business advice and consulting, estate planning, insurance services, portfolio assistance, and establishing relationships with financing resources.

The greatest value you can probably receive from your CPA is assistance in the processes of increasing profits and managing your money wisely. Meet with and communicate regularly with your CPA, so he or she can act as a trusted sounding board and advisor.
