Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, one of the worlds largest professional service firms, is comprised of Deloitte Consulting LP and Deloitte & Touche LLP. The business was established in December 1989 by the merger of Deloitte, Haskins and Sells, founded in 1845, and Touche Ross, founded in 1947.
The company has 95,000 people in more than 140 countries. Nearly 30,000 work in 100 U.S. cities. It provides services worldwide through accounting, consulting and business transformation solutions. Clients range from startups to Fortune 1000 global organizations.
Deloitte Consulting, founded in 1995, was created as a separate division and employs approximately 15,000. Of those, 269 work in Pittsburgh and 150 in Harrisburg.
"We work hand in hand with clients to improve business performance, drive shareholder value and create a competitive advantage," Lisa Tannenbaum, human resources manager, said.
The Harrisburg location is a project office of Deloitte Consulting. It is largely involved with systems integration and solutions for the state.
The catalog of employee benefits includes an extensive health and welfare package, as well as work-life opportunities that range from fitness programs and adoption assistance to financial planning, mortgage assistance and long-term-care insurance.
Flexible work arrangements include flex time, compressed workweeks, summer leave programs and telecommuting. Domestic partner and adult-dependent benefits provide health and welfare coverage to same-sex or opposite-sex domestic partners, as well as to dependent parents and adult children.
New to the company this year is the Women's Initiative-Vision 2005, a set of goals and strategies designed to increase the number of female partners and directors at Deloitte.
"Our woman's initiative consists of seminars and training with female mentors," Sarko said. "The mentors tell us how to reach our goal, but it is up to the individual to take ownership of her job and carve out a career."
In addition to in-house training, women also meet for informal outings and events.
"We met at the Hershey Spa," Sarko said. "We had a chance to talk, relax and enjoy each other's company."
The company has achieved recognition worldwide. It has appeared on Fortune's list of "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" five times and on Working Mother Magazine's list of the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" eight times. Training Magazine named it one of the 100 "Top Training Companies."
Workers are treated to annual summer picnics, Christmas parties and staff retreats. One of the highlights is the annual children's party in Pittsburgh, which has grown to include 200 participating families.
