Greg Slaybaugh can't remember every detail, but he remembers the day it happened. At 8:30 a.m. on July 8, 1993, he felt the right side of his body grow numb. The feeling went away but then returned.
Doctors later told him he suffered a brain hemorrhage, which led to a stroke. At the age of 42,
The worst part? Slaybaugh had let his health insurance lapse for several months.
He had tried to save money during a slow period in his janitorial and landscaping business.
Business had picked up again, and Staybaugh was ready to get health insurance coverage when he suffered the stroke.
"When push comes to shove, a tot of people let their health insurance lapse," said Slaybaugh, owner of Slaybaugh Professional Services in Mechanicsburg. "That's what we did, and I got caught."
