Title: Managing Compensation (And Understanding it Too) Authors: Donald L. Caruth and Gail D. Handlogten Publisher: Quorum Books ISBN: 1567203809
This lively, well-written book offers a guide to the mysteries and mystique of how people are compensated in all types of organizations.
It
The book makes clear how compensation systems are conceived and developed and, most importantly, how they are implemented and administered.
Managers with no special training in pay determination will find it an easily accessible handbook.
The book begins with a chapter on the legal framework of compensation and summarizes several laws that affect it, including the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, Americans With Disabilities Act of 1991 and the Civil Rights Act of 1991. The chapter isn't comprehensive by any means, but for those executives who can't keep the different "acts" straight, it's a good, quick reference.
If you're interested, in the "Motivation and Compensation" chapter, the book goes through the entire psychology of motivation, from low-level needs, such as the need for food, water and shelter, to highlevel needs like creativity, challenge and growth.
More practical for most credit union managers is the section on money as a motivator (p. 45).
Most human resources managers will be familiar with the topics covered in this book. However, it is useful as a review or for those executives who find themselves managing the HR function without a strong background in personnel and compensation issues.
