As we strive for CW to become more internationally oriented (and
that is my primary goal for the coming year!), we're discovering
that just wanting to do this, and actually doing it, could be a
formidable task in many respects. For starters, read Meryl David's
letter below concerning the illustrations
used in her article
"Tigers and Dragons; Working with the Media in Asia and the
Pacific" that appeared in the June/July issue. We clearly were not
aware at this end of the insensitivities concerning Asian cultures
depicted in some of the images used to illustrate the article - and our
lack of knowledge of other cultures probably means this may well be a
universal problem, a problem that can be overcome only by better
communication between cultures. And what better way to start this
dialogue, and educational process, than through your international
publication, Communication World? So let's put our heads together
on how we create ways to share your cultural knowledge, as well as to
contribute your experience and expertise through articles and columns in
Communication World. We have an opportunity to create a truly
international communication management publication - maybe the only of
its kind in the world - by working together on content, and certainly on
illustration! Send me your suggestions, your availability to contribute,
and areas you'd like to cover. Meanwhile, I'll be talking with
district and regional directors to help develop a structure wherein
we'll have regular contributors from various venues, with an
editorial schedule that will cover areas that we've not been able
to explore through the current editorial process. We're in this
together; this is your magazine, and this is your opportunity to make it
what you want it to be. I'm here to help!
