President-Elect
Paul M. Winistorfer is professor and department head of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virginia Tech. Prior to accepting the department head position at Virginia Tech in May of 2001, he was professor and director of the Tennessee Forest Products Center at the University of Tennessee. Winistorfer has been active in wood composites research, publishing widely in the area of mat consolidation and radiation densitometry during pressing. He has received research funding from a wide range of government and industry organizations. He is one of the founders of the QMS Corporation and inventor of the QMS density profile measurement system. He is a two-rime recipient of the American Museum of Science and Energy Technology Award. Winistorfer joined FPS as a student member in 1976. He has served the Society in a variety of capacities including member of the Process and Business Control Conference Planning Committee; trustee and Chair of the Mid-South Section, division coordinator for the Composites & Manufactured Pr oducts Division, secretary of the Particleboard & Molded Products TIG, chair of the Mid-South Section, and student chapter advisor. He is a frequent contributing author and reviewer for the Forest Products Journal. Winistorfer is a member of SWST, the Society of American Foresters, and the Tennessee Forestry Association. He holds BS and PhD degrees in Wood Science from Iowa State University.
Vice President
Ian de la Roche became President and Chief Executive Officer of Forintek Canada Corp. in January 1992. Forintek was established in 1979 as Canada's national wood products research institute. It has laboratories in Vancouver and Quebec City, and regional offices in Edmonton and Ottawa. Forintek delivers programs in information, technology, and training that are geared to help the wood products industry increase its productivity, create new value added products, and protect and extend its markets in North America and around the world. In his previous positions, he played a key role in the establishment of programs to facilitate commercialization of new technologies and the development of joint R&D ventures with industry, government, and universities. In 1990, he held the position of Assistant Deputy Minister of Consultation and Communications, Agriculture Canada. He headed up the Communications Branch and was a senior advisor to the Minister of Agriculture Canada. Prior to that he held the position of Assistant Deputy Minister of the Department of Western Economic Diversification, Saskatchewan. At Western Diversification, he was responsible for the Diversification Fund in the province and was the senior federal coordinator on economic issues. Previous to this appointment, he was a scientist and senior research manager with Agriculture Canada for 18 years. He holds a BSc from McGill, an MSc from the University of Massachusetts, and a PhD from the University of Illinois. He has published over 75 articles, 50 of which have been in the area of plant genetics and biotechnology. De la Roche currently serves on several committees for universities, governments, and the forest products industry. He has been a member of the Forest Products Society since 1993 and served on the Planning Committee for the 1997 Annual Meeting in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

East Central Region
Donatien Pascal Kamdem is assistant professor of wood science in the Forestry Department at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan. His research interests include wood biodeterioration and protection, protection of engineered wood products, recycling of waste wood including urban wood from demolition and deconstruction, and the chemistry of organometallic fixation in wood. Prior to accepting his teaching and research position at Michigan State he was a Research associate at the State University of New York, Syracuse, in the Department of Pulp and Paper Engineering. He has been a member of the Forest Products Society since 1991 and has served as Treasurer of the Great Lakes Section, Secretary of the Treated Wood Products TIG, Vice Chair of the Chemistry TIG, and he most recently served as a member of the Planning Committee for the FPS Conference on Enhancing the Durability of Lumber and Engineered Wood Products held in Orlando, Florida, February 11-13, 2002. Kamdem received an MS degree in chemistry from Yaounde University in Cameroon, an MS in pulp and paper engineering from UQTR in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada, and an MBA in business and a PhD in wood science from Laval University in Quebec, Canada.
Northwest Region
Michael R. Milota is associate professor of wood science and engineering at Oregon State University. He received his BS degree from Iowa State University in 1978 and MS and PhD degrees from Oregon State University in 1981 and 1984. He is a registered professional engineer in Oregon. His current research areas at OSU include wood drying and air pollution from processing. Prior employment has been with the Masonite Corporation and the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin. He has been on the faculty at Oregon State since 1988. Milota joined the Forest Products Research Society in 1976. He has held the offices of secretary and chair of the Drying and Storage Technical Interest Group and division coordinator for Solid Wood Processing. He has also served on the Wood Award review committee, the Annual Meeting Planning Committee, conference planning committees, and has organized various technical sessions for local and national meetings. He is also active in the IUFRO Wood Drying group and the Wester n Dry Kiln Association.
Southwest Region
John R. Shelly is currently a Cooperative Extension Advisor in Biomass and Forest Product Utilization at the University of California Forest Products Laboratory in Richmond, California. He has held academic extension positions since 1978 at UC Berkeley and the University of Kentucky. His primary area of interest and expertise is in the physical properties of wood and manufacturing technology with an emphasis on woody biomass, including underutilized urban and timber species. Current efforts are focused on the technology needed to wisely use these underutilized resources to enhance forest health and economic development. He is currently leading major utilization research projects focused on the potential of tanoak, an indigenous western hardwood species; small-diameter trees; "sudden oak death" infected wood; and urban tree removals. Shelly began his association with FPRS as a Penn State undergraduate student in 1968 and he has been an active member of both the Ohio Valley and the Pacific Southwest (PSW) sections. Major society contributions include his coordination and implementation of the Industry Focus Day at the 54th FPS Annual Meeting in Lake Tahoe, leadership in the Energy Generation & Conservation Technical Interest Group for the past 4 years, and officer/trustee of the PSW section for the past 10 years. He is currently Chair of the Energy Generation & Conservation TIG and Chair of the PSW section. John has authored over 50 scientific and extension publications and presented papers and talks at over 100 conferences and technical workshops. He received a BS in wood science and technology from Penn State and MS and PhD degrees in wood science and technology from the University of California at Berkeley.
