Statins decrease dementia risk. (Pharmacology Update).

In a recent study from Halifax, NS, Canada, older persons who were taking lipid-lowering medication (i.e., statins) were found to have a lower incidence of dementia, even with factoring in variables responsible for a healthy lifestyle. Of 2,305 Canadians over the age of 65 involved in the Canadian

Study of Health and Aging, 492 developed Alzheimer's disease. Lipid-lowering drugs were found to play a role in those who did not develop the disease. Authors suggested that lipid-lowering drugs may enhance cholesterol metabolism in the brain, thereby preventing the changes attributed to the disease. Although further research is necessary, this important study provides yet another reason to keep cholesterol in control and may contribute to an explanation of the pathology of dementia.
