The Defense Department has established a Green Procurement Program to encourage the use of environmentally friendly products.

"Green products and services must be considered the first choice in ALL procurements," the policy memo says.

The memo urges acquisition offices to plan

how they will buy such products and services and to set reasonable goals for green purchases.

Items qualify as "green" if they are made from recycled materials or non-ozone depleting substances, are energy-efficient or use alternative fuels.
