Medical Privacy Issues Under Debate.(Brief Article)

As the 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act deadlines for the enacting of guidelines for privacy of medical records near, insurers are expressing concerns about what is to be included in the privacy legislation and what lines of business would be affected.

Three medical privacy bills are currently being debated in the Senate, but efforts to finalize legislation have stalled. Should Congress fail to enact such legislation by Aug. 21, under HIPAA the Health and Human Services Secretary will issue regulations.
