President Bush has nominated Sam Bodman, deputy Treasury secretary, to succeed Spencer Abraham as head of the Energy Department.

As Energy secretary, Bodman's responsibilities would include overseeing the department's efforts to develop hydrogen-powered automobiles and clean-coal technologies, promoting development of a permanent nuclear waste disposal site at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, and promoting energy conservation.
