Each day, over 27 million children are served low-priced or free nutritious meals in over 97,000 schools as a part of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) School Lunch Program. This program was implemented as a response to hunger and has been successful at improving school performance and attentiveness (Franco 2001). However, fifty years after the School Lunch Program began, the largest problem children are facing is obesity. Societal changes make it necessary for us to reconsider how we look at health and nutrition and what role schools play in meeting those needs.
