A bureaucratic hiccup during the eve of President Clinton's tenure has caused the final privacy regulations under the Health and Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to be delayed until April 14, 2001.
This date may be extended further, pending the Bush Administration's review of comments received during a 30-day window re-opened by Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Thommy Thompson. Once the regs become law, however, health plans generally have two years to comply.
