As part of an ongoing effort to make New York City more environmentally friendly, builders and architects are being asked to provide extra documentation while complying with the state's Energy Conservation Construction Code.

Architects and engineers have been required to submit a

statement of compliance with the conservation code for the past 30 years as part of their permit application. Applicants are now required to submit two additional documents: an energy analysis and a drawing set supporting that energy analysis. In November these requirements may be expanded further. The newest requirements took effect Sept 4.

The energy analysis should list the energy design for the envelope, lighting and power systems for the entire project. It can be completed on software programs such as ResCheck, ComCheck, prescriptive package worksheets or trade off worksheets as provided by the Department of State, or may be energy modeled. Drawing sets should demonstrate the information provided in the analysis. Software options for these include COMcheck Lighting Application Worksheets or Lighting Fixture schedules.

Software and energy analysis are available free from the New York State website www.ny.gov. The software may be downloaded and saved online.

The software programs are also available from the United States Department of Energy website www.energycodes.gov.
