The Association of Women Executives in Corrections

The Association of Women Executives in Corrections (AWEC) is a membership organization with a mission to provide leadership development for female executives, support the career advancement of women in corrections and

promote informed discussion of correctional issues in an atmosphere of mutual respect. With a "Each One ... Teach One" philosophy, AWECs goals are:

* Career development and advancement of female executives at the top administrative levels of corrections;

* Career retention strategies and executive management training;

* The advancement of sound correctional techniques, particularly in the areas of program development, staff training and correctional management;

* Public support for, and understanding of, the criminal justice system with particular emphasis on the corrections function and the interest and acceptance by the community of its responsibility for the prevention of delinquency and the reintegration of persons who have come into conflict with the law; and

* Research in management, leadership and sound correctional practices.

North American Association Of Wardens and Superintendents

NAAWS is the largest, most diverse and oldest organization of prison administrators in the United States and Canada. Its members work in adult and juvenile corrections, in both private and public entities, and run small community-based facilities and large maximum-security penitentiaries. NAAWS represents county, state, federal and military facilities, and their common thread is a quest for outstanding leadership.

NAAWS has a quarterly newsletter (the GRAPEVINE) and a Web site, www.corrections.com/naaws. Every spring, NAAWS holds a training conference, and at each ACA conference, NAAWS hosts its well-known hospitality suite. Also at the ACA Congress of Correction, NAAWS holds the Warden of the Year Banquet, recognizing excellence in the profession.

Most of NAAWS' members are active prison/corrections administrators. In addition, many retired professionals are active in the association and see membership in NAAWS as a way to remain active in the profession.

For more information, contact Art Leonardo, executive director, at (518) 429-1923, e-mail: Elart26@aol.com; mail: NAAWS, P.O. Box 11037, Albany, NY 12211.
