The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is about to experience one of the biggest changes in its history. The election of the London mayor and the new Greater London Assembly (GLA) constitutes the end of an arrangement between the MPS and the Home Office that has lasted for 170 years. The force behind this schism is the newly established Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA), instigated to replace the Home Secretary as the police authority for the MPS.
