Independent Alumni, Students and Supporters Dissatisfied With
University's Recent Elimination of 'Monty Montezuma' Launch
Aztec Warrior Foundation
The new Aztec Warrior will make a surprise appearance on Saturday
September 14th during the SDSU vs. Arizona State football game.
The Warrior plans to enter San Diego Qualcomm Stadium in full
Aztec regalia.
The recently formed Aztec Warrior Foundation is made up of independent alumni, students and supporters of SDSU athletics and educational activities. The non-profit organization was created "to promote civic responsibility, philanthropy, education, and tradition." Formed during the Spring of 2002 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, the AWF seeks to support University activities through community participation, scholarships and donations.
San Diego State University has been without a mascot for the past two years. An ongoing debate between students, faculty, alumni and student organizations argued over the political, cultural and ethnic accuracy and appropriateness of a human depiction of an Aztec Warrior.
A news conference is scheduled for noon, Monday September 16th in front of the offices of San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, 1600 Pacific Coast Highway. The Aztec Warrior Foundation plans additional major announcements regarding the restoration of the Aztec Warrior as well as future philanthropic plans for San Diego State. The new Aztec Warrior will attend. Digital photos of the Aztec Warrior are available upon request: rulon13@aol.com
