New York to enact $2.50 fee on new tires.(News)

The New York legislature overrode Gov. George Pataki's veto May 19 to enact a law to assess a $2.50 fee on new tires for scrap tire abatement and market development for recycled tires.

The Rubber Manufacturers Association and its tire company members supported the legislation. The trade group lobbied the New York state government for years to get a workable scrap tire law on the books there. The association estimates New York generates about 20 million scrap tires annually and has stockpiles of 40 million to 50 million tires, second only
