Last week, President Bush shocked the world by announcing that the US will no longer back the Kyoto Protocol, the international accord reached in Japan in 1997 to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Such gases are believed to be contributing to global warming, a phenomenon which could have disastrous long-term consequences in terms of rising sea-levels and extreme weather conditions (MJ, December 1, 2000, pp.426,427).
