SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 2, 2003

Three prominent San Diego Republicans today called for an end to the recall effort against California Governor Gray Davis. They asked Republicans to not sign recall petitions and to vote "no" if a recall election is held.

Former San Diego Republican chairman Bill Marvin said, "The recall is a colossal political gamble which could actually result in a new, strong and popular Democratic

Governor sitting in the State House, which would harm GOP election chances in California in 2004 and 2006. The recall diverts important Republican political and financial resources from what should be the number one goal of all California Republicans: the re-election of President George W. Bush, including his victory in California."

Also speaking against the recall was Mike Madigan, a business leader and long-time confidante to former Governor Pete Wilson.

"The State of California is facing the worst fiscal crisis since the great depression, and the recall may do great harm to the fiscal, business and civic environment of the State of California. We are opposed to the recall of any elected official who has not committed acts of corruption or malfeasance, and is not physically or mentally incapacitated in any way which would preclude him from serving out his term of office."

RepublicansAgainstTheRecall.com Chairman Scott Barnett, who recently served as CEO of the San Diego Lincoln Club, a prominent GOP donor group, and for the previous seven years, was executive director of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association said: "RepublicansAgainstTheRecall.com urges voters not to sign the recall petitions and to vote 'no' on the recall, should it qualify for the California ballot.

"The recall petition against Governor Gray Davis may be the spark of what could be a calamitous political conflagration in California. The disruption caused by this recall threatens our economy, our schools, our local governments, our business environment and our quality of life. It could destroy whatever shred remains of civilized political discourse in this state."

"This recall will almost certainly lead to political retribution and use of recall as the newest political weapon of mass destruction," Barnett added.

RepublicansAgainstTheRecall.com is a coalition of Republican business leaders, current and former GOP elected officials, and Republican activists opposed to the proposed recall of Governor Gray Davis.
