The conference theme, Tubes for the 21st Century, underlined the continuing vitality of a technology which, though born in the 1940s, is expected to provide high power microwave sources well into the next century. However, the long evolution of tubes has resulted in neglect of sponsored R&D by the largest customer, the US government.
