Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas opened his country's embassy
in Taipei, Taiwan, saying he anticipated "many more years of
bilateral cooperation and mutual advancement." The Republic of
China on Taiwan (ROC) was the first nation to establish diplomatic
relations with St Kitts & Nevis after her
independence from Britain
25 years ago. Douglas said that relationship "has been one of
steady and constructive solidarity." Haiti, the Dominican Republic,
St Kitts & Nevis, St Vincent & the Grenadines and St Lucia are
the only Caribbean nations that recognize the government of Taiwan,
which China considers a renegade province to be reunited with the
mainland.
