PerkinElmer's Explosive Detection System Meets FAA Certification Performance Requirements.

Business/Technology Editors

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 2002

Certification will make Detection Systems VCT30 one of only three

companies worldwide to meet FAA standards

The Detection Systems unit of PerkinElmer, Inc. (NYSE:PKI) today announced that its

Vivid CT30 (VCT30) Explosive Detection System (EDS) has met the performance standards required to achieve EDS certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Based on recently completed testing of the system's detection capabilities and false alarm rates, the company expects to receive official FAA certification in June 2002. Once certified, Detection Systems will be one of only three companies worldwide to meet the FAA's standards for explosives detection.

The VCT30 system combines Detection Systems' dual energy X-ray detection technology with partner Analogic Corporation's computed tomography (CT) resulting in a unit capable of automatically detecting explosives in checked baggage and providing security operators with clear, detailed views of potential threats. An optimum system for small and mid-sized airports, the VCT30 requires minimum terminal space and maintains superior X-ray imaging capabilities. The VCT30 will be Detection Systems' first FAA Certified EDS system, expanding its leading line of automated baggage inspection products.

With over 18,000 systems in operation worldwide, PerkinElmer Detection Systems, is the world's leading supplier of X-ray security screening systems and metal detectors. Detection Systems offers a broad array of products to the aviation, transportation and public building security markets, including walk-through metal detectors, advanced explosive detection systems and large fixed-cargo inspection sites. In December 2001, PerkinElmer entered into a contract to sell the Detection Systems business. The sale is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory reviews that are currently under way.
