Berks County, Pa., Makes List of Most Tightfisted Charitable Givers.

Jun. 18--Berks County is among the nation's 50 most tightfisted communities when it comes to giving to charity.

That's the conclusion of a study by The Chronicle of Philanthropy that listed Berks as the 49th least generous county in America.

The study was based on taxpayers with incomes of $50,000 or more who itemized deductions on their federal tax forms for 1997 -- the year the Internal Revenue Service conducted a broad analysis of individual tax returns.
