Chicago Law Firm Expels Partner Involved in Tax-Shelter Practice under Probe.

Oct. 28--Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP on Monday abruptly expelled a partner who was the lead figure in the law firm's extensive tax-shelter practice that is under federal investigation.

R.J. Ruble, a New York attorney, joined Chicago-based Sidley Austin as part of its 2001 merger with Brown & Wood. The combined firm is the fifth-largest in the U.S. by revenue, according to the annual American Lawyer survey. It has more than 250 equity partners.
