Corps could build two Nevada nuke tombs

DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- When the House gets back after Labor Day, one item on its plate will be a floor vote on H.R. 1020, which requires the Dept. of Energy to find a single safe repository for the nation's high-level nuclear waste by 1998.

Under the bill, developed by Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., the repository, which must be in place by Jan. 31, 1998, will be temporary until a permanent one is built at Yucca Mountain, Nev.

"It's too soon to tell" who would build either repository, said DOE representative Jane Brady. But the Corps remains the most likely constructor. <
