Bush Proposes increased Pell Grant; some lawmakers seek even more.

Low-income college students would get higher Pell Grants, an extra $100 a year over the next five years, under a new proposal from President Bush.

The president's plan would increase the maximum Pell Grant award to $4,550 by 2010. Critics, however, said the increase would barely keep pace with the projected rise in inflation.

The administration said it is not planning to put new money into the Pell program, but rather to repackage federal student aid funding. Bush said he planned to "reform" student loan programs by reducing government subsidies to private l
