The ICOC meeting was conducted via video conferencing at various locations throughout California. Mr. Pockett represented Bio-Matrix at the ICOC's San Diego location which was held at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla on May 1, 2005.
The purpose of the meeting was to develop protocols for issuing stem cell research grants and site selection for the headquarters of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine which is the governing body for issuing Proposition 71 grants.
Subsequent to the May 1st meeting, the ICOC selected San Francisco for its permanent headquarters for the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
"Now that the location for the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine's headquarters has been selected, it is anticipated the grant committee will move forward quickly on developing the requirements for stem cell related research grants," noted Bio-Matrix' Managing Director Brian Pockett.
The Independent Citizens' Oversight Committee is responsible for the oversight and management of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, which was established in 2004 with the passage of Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative. The statewide ballot measure, which provided $3 billion in funding for stem cell research at California universities and research institutions, was approved by California voters, and called for the establishment of an entity to make grants and provide loans for stem cell research, research facilities, and other vital research opportunities.
