In 1993 Felipe Gonzalez was elected as the Spanish Prime Minister for a successive fourth term. At the time of the election his Socialist Party were accused of corruption, Spain had the highest EC rate of unemployment and the Spanish peseta had been devalued three times. Gonzalez was the youngest EC leader at his first election in 1982, and keen to put Spain back into action after 40 years of the Franco dictatorship. While in office Gonzalez has seen Spain become a major European power, and stage the Olympic Games and Expo 92.
