MapInfo Profiles Election 2004 Swing State Voters; From Iowa to North Carolina, MapInfo...

TROY, N.Y. -- With the 2004 Presidential election season heating up, MapInfo (NASDAQ: MAPS) today released interesting lifestyle facts about Americans living in the key swing states of Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and North Carolina. Using its PSYTE(R) U.S. Advantage segmentation solution, MapInfo

uncovered the television viewing and past time habits of this year's key swing voter groups. Reaching these demographics will be crucial for this year's presidential candidates.

With PSYTE, public agencies and marketers can uncover the lifestyle habits of key demographic groups, find out where they live and identify others like them. The PSYTE neighborhood "clusters," or types, are unique in terms of specific demographics, consumer behavior and location. Based on PSYTE clusters, here are some descriptions of life in these key states:

--Village Americana--The "typical" American small town demographic can be found all over Iowa and Michigan, but Ohio leads the pack. Living in peaceful solitude and averaging incomes of $38,000, these folks keep it simple. The most popular activities include playing bingo and going to country music concerts. At home they unwind in front of the TV watching Country Music Television or TV Land.

--Quiet Streets--Americans in this cluster live across Ohio, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin. Public service is a hot button with many people serving in their local, small town governments. When relaxing, these members of unions and veterans clubs attend auto shows and country music concerts or watch Outdoor Life Network on television.

--Country Roads--Many people in this demographic live in the state where they were born, which is often Iowa and the North Central states of Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan. Made up of union members, fraternal order members and woodworkers, these folks are also overwhelmingly white. When watching TV, these folks tune into the Game Show Network, ESPN and any auto racing or beauty pageant. Mean family income is $53,700.

--North Carolina's Tar Heel Voters--Democratic Vice Presidential nominee John Edwards seeks to win his home state, but who will decide at the polls? According to MapInfo, Black Memoirs is the largest cluster with high representation all throughout the southeast. 65 percent African American, these families are often farm and factory workers, averaging an income of $37,000. The second largest group is Outback USA. These folks are 80 percent white, primarily high school educated and earn an average of $47,000 in household income.

"The country's attention is on the November 2 election, which could be decided by the voters in key swing states. MapInfo has uncovered information about the people that live in these states--what they enjoy watching on television and how they spend their free time," said Chris Michels, PSYTE product manager for MapInfo. "Just as this information can be used by the political parties to determine whom to target, MapInfo's geodemographic research can also help companies better understand who their target audiences are, where they are located and how they can better reach them with their message."
