USAID HELPS TOURISM PROJECT.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing US$1.5 million over the next two and a half years for another phase of the Environmental Audits for Sustainable Tourism (EAST) Project in Jamaica, reports CANA (July 2, 2000).

EAST seeks to improve the environmental

performance of private tourism and manufacturing companies through the adoption of a corporate environmental management system (EMS). The project is a collaborative initiative between USAID, the Jamaica Hotel & Tourist Association, and the Jamaica Manufacturers Association with technical assistance from a U.S.-based consulting firm, Hagler Baitly Services Inc. A similar initiative was funded at US$1.2M from July 1997-March 1999, focusing on small hotels in the Negril area and later expanded to hotels in Portland.

This phase will cover the major tourist destinations, including Montego Bay and Ocho Rios."
