Which? welcomes July's report from the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) on the regulation of doctors, and the parallel review of non-medical regulation.

Investigations into a series of medical scandals over the past decade, such as Harold Shipman, Bristol Royal Infirmary and others, highlighted serious

shortcomings in the current approach to regulation, Which? had previously expressed concerns about the focus and emphasis of the system.

Which? believes the CMO's recommendations, such as reform of the General Medical Council, better coordination with other areas of healthcare regulation, greater public and patient involvement and a new system of revalidation of doctors offer the prospect of a system that can be trusted to meet the needs of patients and the public.
